Inscription at the entrance to the Salt Lake Temple
This is a very long post.
When I first published this post I thought I had researched "Holiness to the Lord, The House of the Lord" inscriptions pretty thoroughly and that I understood them fairly well. I was wrong. Among other errors I had thought that most temples had one inscription and that the one temple I knew of with three had more than any other. I have since discovered that most temples have more than one, quite a few have three and at least one has four. So now, while I certainly understand more about them, anything I say is based on what I know now and is subject to change as I continue to learn more (sounds kind of like "line upon line" doesn't' it?). Special thanks to Brian Olsen of 3D Latter-Day Temples for his collaboration on this project.
I've tried to determine what the rules are around when a temple has more that one inscription and where they are placed. However there is so much variation that it appears that, though there are trends, there are no clear rules. The most common place for an inscription is on the east side of the temple. The second most common place is over the entrance doors. When the entrance is not on the east side the temple is likely to have more that one inscription (one on the east side and one over the entrance) but there are some temples with multiple inscriptions, all on the east side and some with more than one but none on the east side. I should also point out that directions are imprecise. Often temples do not face the cardinal directions exactly. When this is the case the Church typically designates one of the sides that faces partially east as the east side, even if it is not the one that faces mostly east.
On many of the early temples the Church only included "The House of the Lord," though most of these have been changed (see the third list below). They also often reversed the inscription, making it: "The House of the Lord, Holiness to the Lord" and on Hamilton New Zealand (now changed) (GoogleMaps: Photo), Sydney Australia (GoogleMaps: Photo) and Manila Philippines (now changed) (photo) "House of the Lord, Holiness to the Lord" (no "The").
At the end of this post are three lists. A list of how many inscriptions there are in each language, a list of when and on which temple each language was first used and a list of the exact inscription and where it is on each temple.
Kirtland Temple
The Church inscribed “House of the Lord” on The Kirtland Temple’s east wall over the entrance (Photo of the Kirtland Temple). The Church originally referred to it as the House of the Lord before they started calling it a temple (kirtlandtemple.org: history). It is important to note that this inscription is painted and has been changed often.
Nauvoo Illinois Temple
The architectural drawings of the original Nauvoo Temple do not include an inscription (Elevation of the temple: now in erection at Nauvoo, 1842 September). However at least one photograph and several drawings show an inscription (1847 Photograph and 1847 Drawing). Also Heber C. Kimball recorded Brigham Young’s request that an inscription be added over the temple’s entrance (Meridian Magazine: Why Does “Holiness To the Lord” Appear on LDS Temples?).
St. George Utah Temple
An early drawing of the St. George Utah Temple by Church Architect Truman O. Angell shows plans to included an inscription surrounding the top east window (Architectural drawings of St. George Temple). However, this plan was not carried out and early photographs of the temple show that there was not an inscription (1914 Photograph). The Church added one (metal letters mounted on the east side) during the 1975 renovation (3D Temples: Saint George Utah) and a second inscription (the name of the Church and temple) over the north, annex entrance. As part of the second renovation, completed in 2023, they removed the 1975 metal letters and replaced them with an inscription surrounding the top east window similar to the one originally planned (Church of Jesus Christ Temples: Photo). They have also changed the inscription over the north annex entrance (Church of Jesus Christ Temples: Photo).
Logan Utah Temple
During the original construction of the Logan Utah Temple the Church sculpted a keystone shaped like a scroll over the lowest east center window and inscribed “Holiness to the Lord” in gold letters into it (Rickety Blog: Logan Utah Temple). There does not appear to be an inscription anywhere else on the temple. This is the only operating temple without the complete inscription.
Manti Utah Temple
Manti Utah Temple entrance ca. 1975
(photo provided by Brian Olsen)
Early photographs of the Manti Utah Temple do not show an inscription (1887 Photograph). The Church added "The House of the Lord, Dedicated May 1888, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" in metal letters on the annex wall over the north side entrance during a 1956 annex renovation (see photo above). They shortened the inscription to Holiness to the Lord The House of the Lord" in new metal letters as part of the 1985 renovation (Photo and 3D Temples: Manti Utah Temple). Since the 2024 renovation the inscription is in stone (Photo).
Salt Lake Temple
During the original construction of the Salt Lake Temple the Church included an arched stone in place of where the top east center window would go. They inscribed this stone with “Holiness to the Lord, the House of The Lord, Built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Commenced April 6, 1853, Completed April 6, 1893” (Photo). Therefore Salt Lake is the first operating temple to have the complete inscription. There is also an inscription near the entrance, added during an entrance renovation in 2001 (Photo).
Laie Hawaii Temple
Early photographs of the Laie Hawaii Temple do not include an inscription (World War II Museum: 1941 Photo and Undated Photo). It appears that as part of a renovation in 1962 the Church added an inscription in metal letters high on the east side of the building (The Lā'ie Hawai'i Temple: A Century of Aloha). The Church renovated the temple again in 1978 and moved the inscription to the lower east side (The Lā'ie Hawai'i Temple: A Century of Aloha, note the first and second photos). During the 1980s the Church made a number of repairs and improvements to the exterior of the temple and its grounds (The Lā'ie Hawai'i Temple: A Century of Aloha) at some point during this period they changed the inscription back to metal letters high on the east side with the name of the Church on the lower east side (note the first photo in above reference). Finally in 2011 the Church changed the inscription again, removing the name of the Church and reversing the inscription, which had been "The House of the Lord, Holiness to the Lord" to the more standard "Holiness to the Lord, the House of the Lord."(ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org: Photo) There is also an inscription over the entrance doors probably installed as part of the 2010 renovation (GoogleMaps: Photo).
Idaho Falls Idaho Temple
The inscriptions for the Cardston Alberta (Photo), and Idaho Falls Idaho (Photo) temples are in metal letters on the annex walls over their entrances. Cardston did not have an inscription originally (University of Lethbridge: Photo) but the Church added one to the side of the building sometime after the 1966 renovation and before 1972 (University of Lethbridge: Photo) then moved it to its current location in 1991 as part of an annex renovation (3D Temples: Cardston Alberta). Idaho Falls had an inscription over its entrance originally (Deseret News: Photo), which the Church moved when they built its annex (3D Temples: Idaho Falls). Even though the Cardston temple's entrance is on the west side it only has one inscription.
Mesa Arizona Temple
The recently renovated Mesa Arizona Temple (Photo) also has an inscription over its east side entrance. The Church has renovated Mesa twice (3D Temples: Mesa Arizona) however it has always had an inscription over its east side entrance (Post Card from 1948) (Photo after 1975).
The Mesa Arizona Temple is unique in that it also has inscriptions inside the temple. There are at least four inscriptions, all in metal letters mounted to the walls. Above the door leading from the foyer to the Grand Staircase is the inscription "Holiness to the Lord" (Photo). Above the door leading into the Celestial Room is the inscription "The Glory of God is Intelligence" (Photo) Above the door leading back out of the Grand Staircase to the foyer is the inscription "Blessed are the Pure in Heart for They Shall See God" (Photo). And between the doors leading out of the foyer to the recommend desk is the inscription "Blessed are They Who Obey My Gospel" (Photo)
Bern Switzerland Temple
During its original construction the Church inscribed “Das Haus des Herrn" (German for "The House of the Lord") into the stone wall over the entrance of the Bern Switzerland Temple and they cast “Holiness to the Lord” (in English) in metal over the doors (Photo). This is the first time the Church used a language other than English for an inscription. The Church mounted the complete inscription in German in metal letters to the wall over the doors when they renovated the temple in 1992 (Photo and 3D Temples: Bern Switzerland Temple).
Los Angeles California Temple Entrance
The inscription on the Los Angeles California Temple is in several parts, “The House of the Lord, Los Angeles Temple” is inscribed into the stone on the east side of the building to the left of the entrance (Photo), “Holiness to the Lord” is cast in metal above the entrance doors, similar to how it was originally at the Bern Switzerland Temple (Adventure Patches: Photo) and "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" is inscribed into the stone on the east side of the building to the right of the entrance (Photo).
Hamilton New Zealand Temple
Similar to Bern the Hamilton New Zealand Temple originally had “Holiness to the Lord” in metal over the east doors (Photo) and presumably “House of the Lord” in the stone wall over the entrance (though I haven't found any historic photos that show it). In 1968 they extended the entrance forward a bit (to the edge of the entrance alcove) and moved the inscription to the edge of the alcove roof (I've seen photos but don't have a good example). In 1986 they moved the entrance back and put the inscription in stone above the entrance (GoogleMaps: Photo). After the latest renovation in 2016 they changed the inscription to metal letters and reversed it to "Holiness to the Lord, The House of the Lord.” (Photo).
London England Temple
I have not been able to find historic photographs of the London England Temple entrance. Similar to Bern and Los Angeles, current pictures show “Holiness to the Lord” cast in metal over the temple’s original east front doors but nothing in the stone above it (Wikipedia: Photo). However since 1992 this is no longer the main entrance and the complete inscription is in stone over the new entrance on the north side of the building (Wikipedia: Photo). Assuming this temple followed the pattern of Bern, Los Angeles and Hamilton (which were all built at roughly the same time) then originally “The House of the Lord” would have appeared in stone over the east doors.
Ogden Utah Temple
The inscription on the original Ogden Utah (Photo) and Provo Utah temples (Wikipedia: Photo) as well as on the Seattle Washington temple (Photo) were/are on monumental signs on the east sides of the temples, not on the buildings themselves. All three have entrances on their west sides. Ogden (Photo) and Provo had (GoogleMaps: Photo) a second inscription to the right of the west entrance added in 2002, while Seattle only has the one inscription. After the Church rebuilt the exterior of Ogden they again gave it two inscriptions, one over the west entrance (Photo) and the second high on the east wall (Photo). Similar to how the Ogden Utah Temple was rebuilt the Church is currently rebuilding the Provo Utah Temple and naming it the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple.
Portland Oregon Temple
(Photos courtesy of Tim Metcalf)
The Washington DC and Portland Oregon temples have similar inscription locations. Both temples face pretty close to due east with their entrances on the north. However both temples are hexagonal and their east most spires are set diagonally so they do not have an east side. Therefore both temples have an inscription in stone over their entrance doors and both also have two inscriptions on their east spires, one on the northeast side and one on the southeast side. (for Washington DC see: GoogleMaps: Photo and Photo. Special thanks to my good friend Tim Metcalf for providing the above photos of Portland). Similarly the San Diego California Temple has inscriptions over the northeast and southeast sides of its east entrance (GoogleMaps: Photo and Photo). I believe that Washington DC was the first temple to have more than one inscription.
Tokyo Japan Temple
(before its most recent renovation)
The Tokyo Japan Temple’s inscription was on the south east side of the building (Photo). After its 2022 renovation it now has an inscription over the entrance, which the Church turned to face north east (Photo).
Papeete Tahiti Temple
The Papeete Tahiti Temple is the first temple with a bilingual inscription (Tahitian and French, Photo). The Toronto Ontario (English and French, ChurchofJesusChristTemples: Photo) and Montreal Quebec (French and English, Photo) temples also have bilingual inscriptions.
Boise Idaho Temple
There are eleven temples that follow the pattern of the Boise Idaho Temple, which means they are hexagonal with detached spires. Each of these has an inscription on their front spire, regardless of which way the building is facing (sometimes on two sides of the spire like Washington DC). The Guatemala City Guatemala (GoogleMaps: Photo), Lima Peru (see the last paragraph below) and Buenos Aires Argentina (GoogleMaps: Photo) temples also have inscriptions over their entrances.
Johannesburg South Africa Temple
The Johannesburg South Africa Temple used to have a bilingual inscription (English and Afrikaans, Photo) on it's spire, but the Church removed it and placed an English only inscription in glass over the entrance, possibly sometime between 2012 and 2014 (Vicky Bergallo Photography 1st and 4th Photos and Adventure Patches: Photo).
Toronto Ontario Temple
There are two French versions of the first phrase of the inscription. The one the Church used on the first three French inscribed temples (the Papeete Tahiti, Toronto Ontario and Montreal Quebec temples, which are also bilingual) reads “Sainteté à l'Eternel, La Maison du Seigneur” (see above) while the ones on the Paris France, Kinshasa DR Congo and Port-au-Prince Haiti temples reads “Sainteté au Seigneur, La Maison du Seigneur” (Photo of Paris, Photo of Kinshasa, Photo of Port-au-Prince) The first version follows the phrase found in the Louis Segond Bible which is the version of the Bible used by the Church in French-speaking countries while the second is a more literal translation (Meridian Magazine: Why Does “Holiness To the Lord” Appear on LDS Temples?).
Orlando Florida Temple
The Orlando Florida (GoogleMaps: Photo) and St. Louis Missouri (GoogleMaps: Photo) temples have "The House of the Lord" part of the inscription over their entrances and the complete inscription on their east sides. The Madrid Spain Temple had inscriptions like Orlando and St. Louis until 2021 when the Church replaced the inscription over the entrance with the full inscription (GoogleMaps: Photo from 2018, GoogleMaps: Photo from 2022).
Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple
In addition to the original inscription high on the east side where it is difficult to see, in 2015 the Church added a window engraved with the inscription to the west side of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple next to the entrance (Utah Valley 360: Local Artist Prepares Special Window For Mt. Timp Temple).
Bismarck North Dakota Temple
There are 49 temples that follow the pattern of the Monticello Utah Temple. Most of these have multiple inscriptions, typically they have one in glass over the entrance, one in stone on the same side as the entrance and one in stone on the east side. Even when the entrance is on the east they often have two. Of the 49 only six had a single inscription when built, though five more have only one since the Church rebuilt them (see my post on renovations and expansions). For example the Bismarck North Dakota Temple has three inscriptions, one in glass over the north entrance, one in stone on the transom of the north side portico (ChurchofJesusChristTemples: Photo) and one on the east side (ChurchofJesusChristTemples: Photo).
Guadalajara Mexico Temple
The Guadalajara Mexico Temple has four inscriptions, more than any other temple I have seen. It has one in glass over the south facing entrance (GoogleMaps: Photo), one in stone on the south side of the spire (GoogleMaps: Photo), one in stone on the east side (GoogleMaps: Photo) and one in stone on the west side facing the street (GoogleMaps: Photo, note which way Moroni is facing).
Manhattan New York Temple
Since the building is more than just a temple, the inscription on the Manhattan New York Temple is not on the building's exterior (Gallery). On the west side there are two pairs of doors into the building. They both open into an entry foyer (GoogleMaps: Photo). To the right is the meeting house and church public affairs parts of the building, to the left is a second set of doors that leads into the temple part of the building. The inscription is above this second set of doors. (GoogleMaps: Photo).
Vancouver British Columbia Temple
There are eight temples in Canada. Despite the fact that both French and English are official languages of Canada only the Toronto Ontario and Montreal Quebec temples include bi-lingual English and French inscriptions, the others just use English.
Brigham City Utah Temple
The Brigham City Utah (GoogleMaps: Photo), Provo City Center (ChurchofJesusChristTemples: Photo) and Taylorsville Utah (GoogleMaps: Photo) temples have underground parking garages that include an entrance into the temple. They also have inscriptions over these entrances in addition to the inscriptions on their east sides and / or over their main entrances.
Paris France Temple
Several temples have separate entrances for the baptistry. The Calgary Alberta (GoogleMaps: Photo), Indianapolis Indiana (GoogleMaps: Photo) and Paris France (Photo) temples have a second inscription over the baptistry entrance. Paris has three inscriptions in total, one each on the east (courtyard) side, south (street) entrance and north (baptistry) entrance.
Lima Peru Temple
In 2020 the Church added second inscriptions over the doors of the Lima Peru (GoogleMaps: Photo) and Columbia River Washington (GoogleMaps: Photo) temples.
